CROSS-COUNTRY SKI TRAILS:

Gartzke Flowage Recreation Area Cross-Country Ski Trail

Trail update as of March 5, 2026

The Gartzke Flowage Cross Country Ski Trail is currently in poor condition due to recent warm temperatures. Please limit use of the trail until the ground has firmed up following the spring thaw.

Seasonal restrictions help prevent rutting and erosion that commonly occur when soils are saturated. Allowing the trail time to dry and stabilize now helps protect the surface, reducing the need for repairs and helping ensure the trail remains open and enjoyable during the high use season.

With colder temperatures expected this weekend, skiers may encounter some icy spots. Please use caution and enjoy the trails.

Please use caution around the flowage. Ice on the Gartzke Flowage is never safe to walk on due to natural springs and moving water.

No trail pass is required.

Jack Lake Recreation Area Cross-Country Ski Trail & Fat Tire Trail

Trail update as of March 5, 2026

The Jack Lake Cross Country Ski Trail is currently in poor condition due to recent warm temperatures, and the trail will no longer be groomed for the season. Open areas are ice packed and mostly unskiable.

Please limit use of the trail until the ground becomes firm following the spring thaw. Seasonal restrictions help prevent rutting and erosion that often occur when soils are saturated. Protecting recreation trails during this time reduces the need for repairs and helps keep trails open and in better condition for the next high use season.

Skiers ages 18 and older are required to have either an annual permit issued by the Langlade County Forestry, Parks, and Recreation Department or a daily use permit available at the onsite self-service payment box. The daily cross-country ski fee is $10 per day for adults 18 and older. Children under 18 ski free. Annual passes are available for $30 per year for adults and may be purchased at the Forestry, Parks, and Recreation Office at 1633 Neva Road in Antigo, Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Annual passes are valid from the official trail opening through November 31 each year. A new annual pass is required after November 31. For more information, please call 715-627-6300. These fees support the ongoing operation and maintenance of the Jack Lake Cross Country Ski Trails, ensuring they remain a premier destination for ski enthusiasts. Failure to pay required fees violates the county ordinance and may result in a citation.

The Jack Lake sledding hill and snowshoe trails are open and available to the public free of charge. The one-mile snowshoe loop is located at the north end of the parking area. Please do not snowshoe on groomed cross-country ski trails. Skijoring and winter fat biking are permitted on the ski trail system. Additional winter fat biking and snowshoe opportunities are available approximately one-half mile down the road at Veterans Memorial Park. The snowshoe trail and Jackalope Slope Sledding Hill do not require a user fee.

Jack Lake Ski Trails are typically groomed on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, with Friday grooming as needed throughout the winter season.

Kettlebowl Recreation Area Cross-Country Ski Trail

Trail update as of March 8, 2026

The Kettlebowl Cross Country Ski Trail is closed for the season. Please limit use of the trail until the ground becomes firm following the spring thaw.

Seasonal restrictions help prevent rutting and erosion that often occur when soils are saturated. Protecting recreation trails during this time helps reduce the need for repairs and supports keeping trails open and in good condition for the next high use season.

Snowshoers using the cross-country ski trails are asked to respect the ski tracks and skating deck. Please walk along the far side of the skate deck and be mindful that some sections of the trail are multi-use and shared with snowmobilers.

Please note that Kettlebowl XC ski trail groomers aim to groom every Saturday morning. When Kettlebowl Ski Hill is closed, parking is available by the entrance gate. A new trailhead is located approximately 100 yards from the entrance gate. Please do not block the gate.

 No trail pass is required.

Maranatha (Silver Birch Ranch) Cross-Country Ski Trail

Trail update as of March 8, 2026

The Maranatha Cross Country Ski Trail is in poor condition due to recent warm temperatures, and the trail will no longer be groomed for the season. The trail remains groomed and tracked, but conditions vary throughout the day, with icy sections in the morning and soft, sticky snow in the afternoon.

The signage on the trails was installed after the July 19, 2019, storm cleanup, when an old trail was brought back online, so try Derecho Lane (formerly Widow Maker).

Trail update as of March 8, 2026

Following the recent warm weather, most of the Moccasin Ski Trail still has a base of more than 6 inches. There are three short sections where snow does not extend fully across the trail, but there is still enough coverage to ski through, and no areas of standing water.

Sticks and branches have been cleared, although some debris remains in areas with hemlock trees. The skate deck is firm and crusty, with some uneven spots, but overall still very good for skate skiing. The classic tracks are no longer present.

The trail will be groomed again once additional snowfall is received. When temperatures rise above freezing, soft spots may develop on Bear Lane and in the parking lot

.The Elcho XC Ski Club will continue maintaining the trail as long as it remains in good condition and is used. This may be the best skiing of the season.

Skijoring is allowed on the ski trail. Winter fat biking is permitted on the snowshoe trail but not the ski trail. Winter fat biking is also allowed (not on the ski trail).

No trail pass is required.

Springbrook Cross-Country Ski Trail

Trail update as of March 9, 2026

The Springbrook Cross Country Ski Trail is closed for the season. Please limit use of the trail until the ground becomes firm following the spring thaw.

Seasonal restrictions help prevent rutting and erosion that often occur when soils are saturated. Protecting recreation trails during this time reduces the need for repairs and helps keep trails in good condition for the next high use season.

Snowshoers, hikers, and winter fat bikers are welcome to use the edge of the trail. Please stay off the groomed skiing surface and respect the ski tracks and skating deck. Snowshoeing is permitted along the side of the groomed trail only. When trail conditions are soft, please avoid riding fat bikes to prevent rutting and protect the trail for skiers.
